Winocm: The Jailbreak 'Needs Work But Its Almost There'

Hacker winocm, who previously demonstrated a jailbreak of the iPhone 5 on iOS 6.1.4, has tweeted with a minor status update.

The status of the jailbreak is pretty much: it needs work but its almost there. (For a very small subset of devices.)

At this point in time its unclear which devices winocm is planning to support; however, it's likely that the iPhone 5 will be one of them. In early September, he tweeted photos of Cydia running on an iOS 6.1.4 iPhone 5. Previously, he also indicated the successful jailbreak of the iPhone 4 so that's another device that could be supported.

iTunes 11.1 Kills Custom Restore IPSWs for iOS 7

iH8Sn0w, the hacker behind Sn0wBreeze, reveals that Apple has killed the ability to restore custom IPSWs for iOS 7 with the release of iTunes 11.1.

So iTunes 11.1 seems to kill Custom IPSWs for iOS 7. Alternatives will be needed to perform custom restores.

(More technically, iTunes 11.1 recalculates the partial-hash of every img3 instead of using the ones in BuildManifest.plist). Which results in modified images having a different hash and being rejected by Apple’s TSS.

In other news, iTunes 11.1 also breaks iREB on s5l8900x devices (iPhone 2G, iPhone 3G, and iPod touch 1G).

Thankfully, it appears as though iH8Sn0w is already working on a tool to restore without iTunes.

Save Your SHSH Blobs Before iOS 7 is Released

iOS 7 is set for release today and this is a reminder to everyone to save your SHSH blobs!

While SHSH blobs are currently of little use to those with A5+ devices, a future exploit might make them important so we suggest you grab them using one of methods linked below.

If you have an older device such as an iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, or iPod touch 4G, it's even more important that you save your blobs so you have the option to downgrade in the future.

You can use one of the following tutorials to save your SHSH blobs:

iH8Sn0w Says There's a Possibility of an iOS 6.1.3/6.1.4 Jailbreak, Recommends Not Updating to iOS7

iH8Sn0w, the hacker behind sn0wbreeze, says there is a possibility an untethered jailbreak will be released for iOS 6.1.3/6.1.4 and recommends staying on iOS 6 or downgrading back to iOS 6 if you are already on iOS 7.

He made the comments via a blog post moments ago:

If you are currently on iOS 7, I would recommend downgrading to 6.1.3/6.1.4 (via DFU). Why? There is currently a possibility of a potential 6.1.3/6.1.4 untethered A5+ jailbreak being pushed in the upcoming days/weeks.

If you wish to be included if such thing takes place, downgrade now. While you still can! Once iOS 7 goes live later today, the 6.1.3/6.1.4 signing window should close within the hour of the release (possibly even minutes). If you're still running 6.1.3/6.1.4, today is your last chance to restore and get a "fresh" start.

The jailbreak would likely be based on the work done by winocm. To keep up to date with progress on the jailbreak's release, please follow iClarified on Twitter, Facebook, Google+, or RSS.

We'd also suggest saving your SHSH blobs if you haven't already.
